Sundell Sculptures

A Token of Promise

In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln tried to cement relations with New Mexico Pueblo Native Americans by promising the continuation of the land-grant rights granted them under Spanish authority with the presentation of “canes of power.” Each cane is still revered as a symbol of continued sovereignty and remains a reminder of Pueblo authority. This sculpture commemorates the presentation of the canes by President Lincoln to each of the leaders of the 19 Pueblos.
